Iyengar Yoga Beginner Class

WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA

We are very excited to add Introduction class to our evening class schedule with Certified Iyengar yoga Teacher, Samuel Cooper

About Sam:

Sam recently retired and moved to Beaufort after 41 years as a Presbyterian minister.  He took up the practice of yoga nearly 10 years ago and for the last 7 years has practiced in the Iyengar tradition.  Sam was certified to teach in 2015 and began teaching in Nashville.  In 2014, he attended Geeta Iyengar’s intensive in Pune and will return to Pune in December to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute for two months.  Sam has participated in numerous workshops let by senior Iyengar teachers including Manouso Manos, Lois Steinberg, Dean Lerner, Eddy Marks, and Mary Obendorfer.  His primary teachers are Gary Jaeger, Rachel Mathenia, and Jan Campbell in Nashville.

Sam is deeply committed to the study of the art, science, and philosophy of yoga as disseminated by B.K.S. Iyengar and the systematic intelligence that it brings to his practice.  A naturally curious person, Sam enjoys exploring the asanas, both new and familiar, to see what they have to offer on any particular day.

Sam and his wife Lily have three grown sons.  An avid fisherman, Sam restored a 1969 SeaCraft which he named SeaWhatHappens, a name that reflects his approach to life.

Class starts September 6th, and will meet Wednesdays 6-7.15pm

This class focuses on classical standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and relaxation poses.  It is the perfect choice for students new to Iyengar yoga or for students looking to build a stronger foundation in their practice. The poses that are learned in this class are a necessary foundation and it is recommended that students stay at this level for at least ten weeks.

Rock, Roll and Release

Hit the reset button for your body. Life is filled with stress, and the body has a tendency to absorb that tension, storing it in the muscles, joints and connective tissue. This ends up restricting the natural flow of blood, lymph, and nerve impulses, which can lead to chronic stress patterns that further exaggerate physical tension. In this head to toes exploration we will use Yoga Tune-Up balls of various sizes and densities to explore remedies and techniques that can help to loosen up overworked or underused areas that have become tension “hot spots”. Tune-Up balls are made of a special rubber that grips at your skin, grabs at multiple layers of muscles, and rubs out adhesions in a deep penetrating way. Carol is excited to be returning and share some new as well as favorite fascial techniques with us.

All materials needed for workshop are provided. Tune-Up balls will be available to purchase after the session.

Surya Namaskara, Sun Salutations , per teachings of Ashtanga Vinyasa Method.

In this Workshop we shall:
Research and Explore Sun Salutations step by step.
Study it's individual poses (asanas) and their dynamic actions and transitions using Hatha yoga techniques.
Connect postures and synchronize movement and Breath with Focus (drishti) into Vinyasa.
Learn safe modifications (for injuries or levels of practice) , add dynamism to build strength.

Project:
This project is oriented to different groups of students, possibilities for exploration are infinite.
Experienced students will dive into intricate movements and seek ways to add dynamism and strength to their practice.
Those newer and new to the practice will learn many possibilities for execution of sun salutations and their individual positions.
If you can not do Downward Dog position, there will be plenty to explore for you too!
We will have different focus groups and each will receive appropriate direction.

In episode 2 ~ The "Father and Mother" of asanas, the closing sequence poses. Sirsasana (headstand) and Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) their preparation, execution and variations.

Inversions to transform and strengthen your practice, or start for the first time. Safe, creative, supportive.

From our Teacher David Garrigues:

"Vinyasa can be defined as sequential, sacred movement and posture performed with seamless concentration, and drishti is training yourself to maintain your gaze where you choose.

You use these techniques like you use a pressure cooker, with attention and care. You utilize discipline, mental power, intention, intuition and skill to go within and tap your resources. you apply pressure to yourself, with the intention of generating creative energy to pierce through and perceive reality, and it is important to use caution when working with life force in this way.You must take this process seriously and care for and respect yourself." 13 Ways of Looking at our Yoga Poses

an Iyengar Yoga Workshop with Karin Stephan

Sunday, May 29th, 10:00 - 1:00 pm

Using the thirteen stanzas from a poem by Wallace Stevens entitled 'Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird' as a launching pad, Karin will have us look at a variety of Yoga poses while keeping in mind thirteen different ways of taking our yoga poses into consideration. Each pose has a form, each pose as a function. This workshop will look at both form [ the precision, beauty and aesthetics of the pose] and function [the purpose, overall effect and desired outcome of the pose] and tie these two principle ideas together with different ways of seeing, thinking about and feeling the asanas we will be working on. She will also draw from a number of types of asanas, such as standing poses, forward bends, balancing poses and inversions and will adapt these poses to each and every person's needs.

About Karin:

Karin Stephan is a leading Iyengar yoga teacher in the United States with a career that has spanned more than 45 years. She credits her understanding and appreciation of the human body to the teachings of BKS Iyengar, the world's foremost yoga master.

As a student of Mr. Iyengar's since 1972 and a certified Iyengar teacher, Karin incorporates his insights and acute sense of observation into her yoga practice and teaching on a daily basis.

Watering the Tree Outside the Fence

...an experiential inward journey
with Rabbi TZiPi Radonsky, Ph.D.,

and Dragana Pavic-Zappia
Saturday, May 30, 1-3:30 pm

Investment: $35, Register before 5/26 for $30

In the mystical Jewish tradition, the sages teach to make a fence around the Torah to keep it safe. The Torah-Hebrew Bible is considered the Tree of Life, the core or soul of who you are. The fence is how we live in the world through telling our stories to our Self and to others and uncovering our mission and identity. We are committed as life long learners to learn, to unfold and to bloom. And we often create for our self a fence of protection that often limits us, even as we are enjoying the blessings of the familiar and of comfort as well as emotional and sometimes physical safety.
Through mindful movement, creative expression, dialogue and story telling we will explore our Tree of Life and our fences and begin to notice where we want to water our tree outside our fence and that we have the key for the lock.

Please bring your crayons, colored pencils and a large piece of paper.

Facilitators:

Rabbi TZiPi Radonsky, Ph.D., TZiPi is a life-long learner, rabbi-teacher, coach, artist and woman of the world. Her primary kavana -- intention -- is to heal the world one
heart at a time, starting with herself. She is a mentor-coach and leader development training coach founder of Watering The Tree Outside the Fence Foundation and Co-Creator of the Society of the Vav. She blends the teachings of mystical Hebrew Wisdom and her 25 years of experience as an executive leadership coach, occupational therapist, mindfulness teacher and global traveler into her teaching and living. She is fun and funny and pushes herself and you to say ‘yes, and…’ to life. Her books The Spiritual Pilgrim Discovers Home, Are you a spiritual Pilgrim? and AND: Building a World of Connection through Jewish Mystical Wisdom show her desire to learn and share her journey hopefully inspiring you to listen to your heart coming back to your true self.

Dragana Pavic-Zappia, is a mover of energy and emotions. She facilitates and inspires her students, teaching from her formal and informal yoga and life experiences. She has learned through disciplining herself how to practice the blending of form and fluidity finding a deep inner calm and peace with the breath of life. She designs and then choreographs the movements within each class depending on the needs of her students with the purpose of getting out of the mind and into the body by following the breath. Through her own exploration she creates a container of direction and focus. Dragana is Kundalini Research Institute Certified yoga teacher as well as Nia White Belt certified. She has over 200 hours of Thai Yoga Therapy training has over a decade of practicing and teaching various styles of yoga and movement. As she loves to say, ‘it is all good!’

Brainy and Bendy

Join Carol Morrissey and Stacy Hannah Saturday March 28th, 1.00pm-3.30pm

Backbends are one of yoga’s most expansive and energetic categories of poses. They are a natural antidote to the forward postures that many of us find ourselves in for much of the day. Unfortunately we rarely have time in classes to cultivate a deep understanding of the intelligent actions necessary to create deep, full, and expansive bends.
In this workshop we will be exploring the terrain of backbends-basic to more advanced- in a safe, sequenced manner, working to develop the skill sets that get us moving the backbends into the spine evenly - creating lift, length and expansion. You will leave with a greater understanding of the actions YOU need to create safe, satisfying backbends.
Carol and Stacy will be limiting the size of this workshop to allow for individual attention. Fee for workshop is $25.
