Iyengar Yoga Beginner Class

WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA

We are very excited to add Introduction class to our evening class schedule with Certified Iyengar yoga Teacher, Samuel Cooper

About Sam:

Sam recently retired and moved to Beaufort after 41 years as a Presbyterian minister.  He took up the practice of yoga nearly 10 years ago and for the last 7 years has practiced in the Iyengar tradition.  Sam was certified to teach in 2015 and began teaching in Nashville.  In 2014, he attended Geeta Iyengar’s intensive in Pune and will return to Pune in December to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute for two months.  Sam has participated in numerous workshops let by senior Iyengar teachers including Manouso Manos, Lois Steinberg, Dean Lerner, Eddy Marks, and Mary Obendorfer.  His primary teachers are Gary Jaeger, Rachel Mathenia, and Jan Campbell in Nashville.

Sam is deeply committed to the study of the art, science, and philosophy of yoga as disseminated by B.K.S. Iyengar and the systematic intelligence that it brings to his practice.  A naturally curious person, Sam enjoys exploring the asanas, both new and familiar, to see what they have to offer on any particular day.

Sam and his wife Lily have three grown sons.  An avid fisherman, Sam restored a 1969 SeaCraft which he named SeaWhatHappens, a name that reflects his approach to life.

Class starts February 21st, and will meet Wednesdays 4.45-5.45 pm

This class focuses on classical standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and relaxation poses.  It is the perfect choice for students new to Iyengar yoga or for students looking to build a stronger foundation in their practice. The poses that are learned in this class are a necessary foundation and it is recommended that students stay at this level for at least ten weeks.

Foundation First

Dear Students,

This is alignment based class open to experienced beginners and Level 1,2 practitioners.

Foundations practice focuses on 3 main principles:

~ Creating space, length and openness in the joints with safety and specific alignment instruction

~Aligning the Joints in the body starting from the base~ depending on posture, our base changes, we learn to create stability from the base up. To start we explore main standing, seated, twisting and inverted poses. Foundational poses build strength and greater awareness and prepare us for inversions. We use props and adjust poses depending on the needs of practitioners.

~ Toning and dynamism ~ Yoga in Action, as we create stability and familiarize our body with standing poses, we can stay and hold with natural breathing patterns and move into meditative quality of the practice and more demanding and challenging postures.

Class  ends with restorative asana and deep relaxation.

This is an ongoing class, drop in $15 or class pass.

Rock, Roll and Release

Hit the reset button for your body. Life is filled with stress, and the body has a tendency to absorb that tension, storing it in the muscles, joints and connective tissue. This ends up restricting the natural flow of blood, lymph, and nerve impulses, which can lead to chronic stress patterns that further exaggerate physical tension. In this head to toes exploration we will use Yoga Tune-Up balls of various sizes and densities to explore remedies and techniques that can help to loosen up overworked or underused areas that have become tension “hot spots”. Tune-Up balls are made of a special rubber that grips at your skin, grabs at multiple layers of muscles, and rubs out adhesions in a deep penetrating way. Carol is excited to be returning and share some new as well as favorite fascial techniques with us.

All materials needed for workshop are provided. Tune-Up balls will be available to purchase after the session.

Workshop Fee, Early bird $ 35.(Before 8/24), $40 after

Connect postures and synchronize movement and Breath with Focus (drishti) into Vinyasa.
Learn safe modifications (for injuries or levels of practice) , add dynamism to build strength.

Project:
This project is oriented to different groups of students, possibilities for exploration are infinite.
Experienced students will dive into intricate movements and seek ways to add dynamism and strength to their practice.
Those newer and new to the practice will learn many possibilities for execution of sun salutations and their individual positions.
If you can not do Downward Dog position, there will be plenty to explore for you too!

From our Teacher David Garrigues:

"Vinyasa can be defined as sequential, sacred movement and posture performed with seamless concentration, and drishti is training yourself to maintain your gaze where you choose.

You use these techniques like you use a pressure cooker, with attention and care. You utilize discipline, mental power, intention, intuition and skill to go within and tap your resources. you apply pressure to yourself, with the intention of generating creative energy to pierce through and perceive reality, and it is important to use caution when working with life force in this way.You must take this process seriously and care for and respect yourself." 13 Ways of Looking at our Yoga Poses

an Iyengar Yoga Workshop with Karin Stephan

Sunday, May 29th, 10:00 - 1:00 pm

Using the thirteen stanzas from a poem by Wallace Stevens entitled 'Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird' as a launching pad, Karin will have us look at a variety of Yoga poses while keeping in mind thirteen different ways of taking our yoga poses into consideration. Each pose has a form, each pose as a function. This workshop will look at both form [ the precision, beauty and aesthetics of the pose] and function [the purpose, overall effect and desired outcome of the pose] and tie these two principle ideas together with different ways of seeing, thinking about and feeling the asanas we will be working on. She will also draw from a number of types of asanas, such as standing poses, forward bends, balancing poses and inversions and will adapt these poses to each and every person's needs.

About Karin:

Karin Stephan is a leading Iyengar yoga teacher in the United States with a career that has spanned more than 45 years. She credits her understanding and appreciation of the human body to the teachings of BKS Iyengar, the world's foremost yoga master.

As a student of Mr. Iyengar's since 1972 and a certified Iyengar teacher, Karin incorporates his insights and acute sense of observation into her yoga practice and teaching on a daily basis.
